Social Media Under 14: Ban or Guide? – Talk
How do we shape digital participation for the next generation?
Accompanying the exhibition Social Studies by Lauren Greenfield, Fotografiska Berlin and FAQ Health present a talk series examining how social media shapes our lives. Discussions will focus on identity, self-worth, mental health, and the ways we navigate digital spaces.
This talk addresses one of the most pressing social and political questions: Should children under 14 be allowed to use social media – or should there be clear legal limits?
Nina Kolleck and Julia von Weiler are two experts who look at the digital lives of children and young people from different professional perspectives:
Nina Kolleck is a Professor of Education specialising in media, learning and digital culture. She advocates for media literacy, education and pedagogical guidance rather than a ban.
Julia von Weiler is a psychologist and expert in child protection in the digital space. She, on the other hand, calls for clear age limits to better protect children from the potential risks of social media.
In addition, two students bring their own experiences and perspectives to the discussion.
Together, they talk about child protection, self-determination, the responsibility of platforms, parents and educational institutions – and how safe, age-appropriate participation in the digital world can be achieved.

About the speakers
Prof. Dr. habil. Nina Kolleck
Prof. Dr. habil. Nina Kolleck is Professor of Educational and Socialization Theory at the University of Potsdam. As an education researcher and political scientist, she investigates how social relationships, digital media and educational processes shape democratic participation and social cohesion. She is the author of Der Kampf in den Köpfen: Wie TikTok, Instagram & Co. unsere Kinder manipulieren (Rowohlt Berlin, 2026) and advises policymakers and practitioners.
Julia von Weiler
Julia von Weiler is a freelance psychologist, mediator and author based in Berlin and Brandenburg, and a renowned voice for digital child protection and children’s rights. From 2003 to 2025, she served as Managing Director of Innocence in Danger e.V. and is a board member of N.I.N.A. e.V., which she co-founded. She combines clinical trauma expertise with a structural perspective on digital platforms and advocates for child rights-based protection concepts and “Safety by Design”.
About the Moderator
Marisol Ekamp is Social Media & Community Manager at F/A/Q. She drives community growth across social media, schools and wherever young people actually come together – from run clubs and parties to community events focused on health. As a member of Gen Z, she brings the questions, perspectives and lived experiences of the community directly into F/A/Q’s work.
