What remains of the legendary spirit of 1990s Berlin – a time of freedom, upheaval, and seemingly endless possibilities?

Gangway e.V. presents a reading of the graphic novel Weißes Papier (Hirnkost Verlag), written by Joe Bliese and illustrated by Cité Noir. The novel immerses you in 1990s Berlin, where poetry meets black-and-white illustrations tracing the transformations following the fall of the Berlin Wall, telling contemporary reality through rhythm and rhyme.

Following the reading, the author and illustrator answer your questions and sign your copy of the graphic novel, which is going to be available for purchase in the museum store.

About the author

Joe Bliese was born in Berlin in 1982 — a city that continues to shape him and serves as both the backdrop and subject of his work. As Joe Madog, he was for many years an active voice and advocate within Berlin’s hip-hop scene, where his passion for language and poetry first emerged.

He studied Cultural and Media Studies and now works as a social worker, coach, and author. In this context, he has organized numerous cultural projects, events, and international exchange programs, all sharing a common goal: fostering personal development and connecting communities, people, and cultures. Years spent living in Paris and London deepened his understanding of urban diversity, yet he has always remained deeply rooted in Berlin.

About the illustrator

Cité Noir is a Berlin-based illustrator who has collaborated with Joe Bliese on several projects over the years. He is currently working on his first self-written graphic novel while continuing to explore and enjoy life as an artist.
Their most well-known collaboration is Porzellan, a hand-drawn animated film created for Joe Madog’s song of the same name, which has been screened at film festivals around the world.
